L-3 MAPPS to Upgrade Canadian Space Agency Robotics Training Facility

Montréal, October 18, 2006 - L-3 Communications MAPPS, a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide additional sustaining engineering services to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) for the Mobile Servicing System Operations and Training Simulator (MOTS). The order is an extension to ongoing work that L-3 MAPPS is carrying out to update the CSA's robotics training facility being used to train astronauts and ground operators of the International Space Station (ISS). The project has already started and the simulator is expected to take advantage of the improved software tools and models via incremental releases until spring 2008.

The primary focus of the work will consist of adding simulation models of components as they are being added to the ISS, integrating the flight software in the simulator and porting the complete simulator from a legacy RISC/Unix-based computer to a PC/Linux platform. These sustaining engineering activities are necessary to ensure that the training facility is up-to-date and maintainable for the duration of the ISS life cycle.

"MOTS is recognized by the international community as the simulator-based training standard for the space station robotics tasks and CSA is appreciative of L-3 MAPPS' contributions," said Benoit Marcotte, director of the CSA space station program.

"L-3 MAPPS is proud that the MOTS has benefited the International Space Station program for more than 10 years," said Shankar Udupa, vice president of engineering & operations, L-3 MAPPS. "We look forward to continuing our cooperation towards the evolution of this mission-critical simulator."
