L-3 MAPPS to Provide Engineering Support on Space Robotics Simulator

Montréal, April 2, 2008 - L-3 MAPPS announced today that it has obtained a three-year engineering support contract, with an option for an additional two years, from the Canadian Space Agency to support the Mobile Servicing System Operations and Training Simulator (MOTS). The simulator is used primarily for training astronauts and ground-based personnel in the operation of the Canadarm2 and Dextre robotic arms currently installed on the International Space Station. Another less known usage of the simulator is for the pre-flight validation of software, procedures and data files that will eventually be uploaded to the Space Station to verify, in a realistically simulated and fully operational environment, that all the components will work together as planned.

Under the contract, L-3 MAPPS will provide the models (graphics, control systems, dynamics) required to reproduce, with the highest level of fidelity, the Space Station configuration for each new mission. Another goal of this contract is to keep the MOTS updated with the latest simulation technology, since the facility is expected to be used for the duration of the Space Station program (until at least 2016). This will permit the simulator to grow in complexity and level of fidelity as newer hardware and software become available.

"We are pleased that the Canadian Space Agency has selected us again for the support of their robotics training facility," said Peter Dawson, president of L-3 MAPPS. "We consider this a vote of confidence in the quality and dedication of our support team."
